Kelly A. Cavanaugh, Esq.
Ms. Cavanaugh was born in Miami, Florida and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona. She returned to Florida for College and Law School and has remained in Florida to practice law. She attended the University of Miami for her undergraduate degree and Barry University School of Law where she earned her Juris Doctor. She has practiced in the Tampa Bay region for the past five years.
Ms. Cavanaugh joined Whittel & Melton in December of 2011, and focuses her practice primarily on criminal defense matters –including, but not limited to DUI defense, sex crimes, violations of probation, and other felony and misdemeanor cases-- as well as select personal injury matters.
Upon graduating from the University of Miami, Ms. Cavanaugh interned with the State Attorney’s Office in Miami, Florida. After law school graduation, Ms. Cavanaugh served as an Assistant Public Defender for the Sixth Judicial Circuit. During her time as an Assistant Public Defender, Ms. Cavanaugh defended and represented the rights of indigent individuals charged with various crimes and defended cases from the arrest stage to trial.
After leaving the Public Defender’s Office, Ms. Cavanaugh worked for a South Florida law firm, handling mortgage foreclosure defense cases and criminal defense matters. During that time, she represented homeowners who were being sued by their mortgage companies in an attempt to foreclose on their homes. While representing these homeowners, Ms. Cavanaugh attended hearings, drafted and argued various motions in defense of the homeowners and in opposition to banks actions and conducted depositions of bank witnesses.
Since joining Whittel & Melton, Ms. Cavanaugh has expanded her experience in civil litigation to include representing victims of auto accidents and other negligence, as well as criminal defense matters.
